A Madrid hospital reunited a mother with her daughter from intensive care on Friday, both had been suffering from COVID-19.

Maria and her daughter Marta were both admitted to the Hospital 12 de Octubre a few weeks ago, and had only been in touch once through video call.

Nurses at the Madrid hospital had arranged for patients to keep contact with family virtually.

Just hours after the phone call, doctors decided that the mother and daughter could recover in the same room.

Medical staff clapped as Maria and Marta could finally see each other.

The "COVID video call" option is now on the patients medical registration.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The vast majority of people recover.
