India will mark its 77th Independence Day this year on August 15, 2023, with the Tricolour hoisting at the Red Fort, Delhi to the tune of the national anthem. In 1947, then-Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru waved the Indian flag on this day declaring India a free country against British rule after countless freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the birth of the free India.

As India commemorates and observes its 77th Independence Day here are other countries that will celebrate the day in commemoration of their independence.

North Korea and South Korea

Two Koreas on the Korean peninsula--North and South Korea--will celebrate their National Liberation Day of Korea or the Independence Day on the same day as India. On August 15, 1945, the American and Soviet forces fostered diplomatic and militant efforts to end Japan's occupation of the Korean peninsula during World War II. Korea was divided into North Korea and South Korea three years later. South Korea will mark the day as ‘Gwangbokjeol’ [which translates to “the day the light returned] while North Korea will observe the ‘Chogukhaebangŭi nal’ or the "Liberation of the Fatherland Day."

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Congo will celebrate its Independence Day on the same as India on August 15. On August 15, 1960, the country gained independence after nearly 80 years of French colonial rule. In DRC, the citizens will mark the 63rd 'Congo National Day' and will celebrate their chance at peace and security they achieved after the end of French rule.

Bahrain

20 years after India gained its independence, Bahrain ended the British colonial rule following a UN census of Bahrainis on August 15, 1971. They signed the friendship treaty with the British that terminated all previous agreements. Previously an emirate, Bahrain was declared as an Islamic constitutional monarchy in 2002. A National Action Charter was inked on 14 February 2002, and Bahrain changed its formal name from the State (dawla) of Bahrain to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein, the sixth-smallest nation in the world, will celebrate its National Day on August 15 coinciding with India. It was liberated from German rule in 1866. Located in the European Alps between Austria and Switzerland, the country will mark Independence day as the 'Assumption of Mary Day' and will observe a bank holiday.
