Madagascar has decided to issue a postal stamp which will have the picture of Mahatma Gandhi in order to celebrate his 150th birth anniversary. The East African island country has a notable Indian diaspora from the city in Gujarat where Gandhi was born, Porbandar. The Indian diaspora over there is called Karanas. The Karanas arrived in Madagascar somewhere in the 19th century and they still play a major role in the economy of the country. They have close ties with Gujarat and they speak Gujarati in their homes. The major cities of the country celebrate Indian festivals with full enthusiasm. Madagascar issued a postal stamp on Gandhi in the year 1998 as well.
