German artists join Extinction Rebellion for drastic climate measures

Over 90 celebrities including filmmaker Fatih Akin, theater director Anna Bergmann, and actor Peter Lohmeyer and others from the German arts and cultural scenes have reportedly signed an open letter to the government calling for immediate drastic measures against the deteriorating ecological crisis. The Extinction Rebellion is supposedly planning on blocking Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Paris, and New York through a peaceful uprising on October 07. Extinction Rebellion is a group that is fighting for goals similar to Fridays for the Future. It is rebelling against extinction through civil disobedience.

Film producer Iris Sommerlatte, a signatory of the letter, while recalling her childhood when it snowed in winter reportedly said that climate change is in plain sight today. She further was hopeful that the initiative will motivate the politicians to take steps to save the environment. The website of the Extinction Rebellion states “We will rebel together in streets and squares and remain there-peacefully, creatively and colorfully”. The promotional video for the Berlin actions posted on their website also states “This is an emergency. It's going to get worse, or civilization is threatened”.

Extinction Rebellion

Extinction Rebellion is a social-political movement with the aim of using civil disobedience and non-violent resistance to compel government action on climate breakdown, bio-diversity loss, and risk of social and ecological collapse. It was established in the United Kingdom back in 2018 with around a hundred academics signing a call to action in support. A number of activists in the movement have reportedly accepted arrest and imprisonment as well. The logo, a circled hourglass, known as the extinction symbol, serves as a warning that time is rapidly running out for many species.

Back in September in the UK, at least four activists from the Extinction Rebellion movement were arrested while attempting to shut down traffic at the cross-channel Port of Dover on September 21, over a protest called No Food on a Dying Planet. The campaign aimed to draw attention to the United Kingdom's dependency on food imports, and to the risks climate change poses to food security. At the same time, another small group of protesters stood at the A20 road near the port, blocking the outgoing traffic. More than 20 police vehicles were deployed in the area to control the situation.
