Greeks marked Easter in lockdown this year unable to celebrate with friends and family, as the country's lockdown to limit the spread of the new coronavirus continued.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday encouraged Greek citizens "not to jeopardise" the country's success and to continue following lockdown orders.

Greece's government imposed a lockdown early in the country's outbreak and so far has managed to keep the number of deaths low.

Measures include the shuttering of churches for all of Holy Week and Easter, with religious services held behind closed doors.

So far, Greece has had 110 deaths caused by the new virus, with 2,235 people infected, according to figures by Johns Hopkins University.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
