STORYLINE:

The Italian Coast Guard on Wednesday encountered a gray whale swimming just outside the port of Fiumicino, near Rome, during regular rounds for environmental surveillance.

After observing the whale swimming in front of the Old Lighthouse of Fiumicino, Coast Guard officers accompanied it with their boat towards the open sea where it headed north on its journey.

A similar whale – perhaps the same one – was spotted off the island of Ponza about halfway between Rome and Naples on April 15, and then again on April 18 in Baiae, a town half-an-hour from Naples.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), gray whales are found in the North Pacific Ocean and migrate down the Pacific coast to southern California and the coast of Mexico.

It is not clear how this whale got to the Mediterranean but according to the NOAA website these whales can swim long distances in deep water during migration.
