Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam condemned a stabbing attack on police Thursday night, as she returned to the city after celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing.

In a statement, authorities said the attack was "an attempted murder and suicide case… in which a 50-year-old man died and a male police officer was seriously injured."

The perpetrator "stabbed himself in the chest" after attacking the officer, the statement said. It said the police officer had sustained a serious back injury.

Lam described the incident as "very regrettable".

"This action clearly goes against the stability of our society and is against the law," she said.
