Hong Kong set for muted pro-democracy protests over the weekend

Hong Kong protests will continue over the coming weekend. However, protests will be comparatively more peaceful than the previous ones. The protesters continue to demand greater democracy as there seem to be no signs of the activists settling down without the government meeting their demands. On October 24, the anti-government protesters organised a mass demonstration asking for a separate Catalonia, raising the concerns which are anathema to the Beijing ruler. The protesters carried Catalan flags and placards urging ‘a fight for freedom together’. 

Hong Kong protest created a political crisis 

It's been five months of Hong Kong protest. The protest is considered to create a massive political crisis and has also caused economic turmoil. The international media reported that “Medical Workers Resisting Tyranny”, a dissent is scheduled on October 26, which will be held at the Chater Garden in the heart of the financial centre along with “Fight Against Police Brutality, Stand with Muslims, Citizens and Journalists,” another protest which will take place on October 27 in the Kowloon district.

Criticism from the Muslim community

In the previous protests held in the Kowloon district, the police used a water cannon truck and targeted few people on the footpath outside the mosques with blue coloured water. This lead to criticism from the Muslim community. People are angry at the police for their conduct during the protests. The police released a statement that read that the incident was the “most unfortunate” and unintended. The senior police officials later visited the Muslim leaders to offer apologies. The blue dye water cannon had hit the gates and steps of the mosque.

Protesting against, ‘one country, one system’

The Hong Kong protesters are against the idea of ‘one country, one system’ which will restrict them from enjoying extensive freedom, not permitted in mainland China. Hong Kong will also lose its freedom to have an independent judiciary and the right to protest. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned other nations from interfering, considering it a matter ‘internal affair’. Chinses government has accused other nations of escalating the issue.
