Hospital staff in Kazakhstan's largest city were treating survivors of a plane crash Friday that killed at least 12 people and injured almost 50 others.

The Kazakhstan Bek Air plane with 98 people aboard came down shortly after takeoff from Almaty International Airport, smashing through a concrete fence and ploughing into a two-story building.

Authorities had earlier put the death toll at 15 but later revised it downward.

The plane was flying to Nur-Sultan, the country's capital formerly known as Astana.
