Italy on Saturday suffered 889 more deaths and 3,351 new infections of the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of people who have died to 10,023, and the number of infections to 92,472.

Authorities also registered 1,434 patients who had recovered from the new virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 12,384.

Italian Special Commissioner for the Coronavirus Angelo Borrelli confirmed the numbers in a new conference, where he also said the Italian Civil Protection, of which Borrelli is also the chief, was ready to help those who are not be able to buy essential groceries and products in the next week.

"We are ready to do our part as in every occasion", Borelli said.

"Our strength is the volunteers, the Civil Protection structures on the territory are already mobilised and our volunteers are already employed to buy groceries for the people that can't go, therefore we'll be ready to distribute food packs or what will be needed in an event of necessity."

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
