The Japanese government announced that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, would hold a remote summit meeting on Thursday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that Japan and Australia were likely to sign a Reciprocal Access Agreement to further strengthen defence and security ties, during the summit.

The two leaders were also expected to discuss other issues including security, economics, and regional affairs.

Kishida on Tuesday expressed the wish to meet with Morrison at an early stage, but said he would not be making any trips abroad this month due to the spread of COVID-19.
