As fires continue to ravage Australia, one of the most devastated communities is on Kangaroo Island just off the continent's southern coast.

Half of the island has burned over the past few weeks, laying waste to homes and herds as resident fled and defended their properties.

John and Carol Stanton fled the fire and returned to find the charred remains of the home they built and their horticultural business.

They were preparing to defend their homes when fierce winds made stronger by bushfires drove embers towards their property.

"The wind was strong all day but fire just created its own wind and it was just horrific," John said as he stood before the charred remains of his home.

The couple run the Stokes Bay Bush Garden, which boasted over 1,000 plants including 150 indigenous Australia species, 16 species found only on Kangaroo Island, and over 80 species of native orchids, according to AuBC.

John, who was born on the island 71 years ago, said the fire was unprecedented.

"Some homes on the island have lost every single acre plus homes, so there are people who are a lot worse off", he added.

Couple said they'd lost hundreds of books and vinyl records, but managed to save some photos, their tractor and a boat.

John's brother, however, lost about 3,000 sheep.

Despite the loss, the Stantons see a silver lining.

"We'll be able to travel and visit grandkids more, so it could be a good thing. You gotta look on the bright side," John said.
