Large protest in support of ousted Khabarovsk governor

Thousands of people gathered for another protest in the Russian Far East city of Khabarovsk on Saturday in support of the ousted governor of the region, Sergei Furgal.

Furgal was arrested on July 9 on suspicion of involvement in murders and was taken to jail in Moscow. He has denied the charges.

Furgal was a popular governor, having been elected in 2018 in a surprise blow to the Kremlin which had backed a rival candidate.

Since his arrest, daily demonstrations have been held in Khabarovsk, with attendance peaking on weekends.
