Dignitaries from Taiwan, Japan and the United States paid their last tribute to former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui Saturday morning at a solemn memorial service.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach were among the officials paying tribute to the late president, who passed away on July 30, at the age of 97.

Speaking during the ceremony at the Aletheia University, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said Lee's efforts had "built up the Taiwan we are now living in".

Lee, an agricultural economist and politician, devoted his career toward building democracy on the island through direct elections and other changes.
