Mexico received half a million Pfizer BioNTech vaccines most of which are the second of two shots destined for frontline healthcare workers.

The precious cargo arrived by plane and was met by Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard on Tuesday.

From now on the Belgian manufactured vaccine, will arrive on flights every Tuesday.

Mexico started vaccinating health workers in mid-December with some 726,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

In addition to Tuesday's cargo, Mexico has received 870,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and two million doses of the Chinese vaccine CanSino are being bottled in Mexico.

Russia's Sputnik V vaccine and another from China that have received emergency approval from Mexican regulators are also expected at some point.

Mexico has 1,995,892 confirmed COVID-19 infections and some 174,657 confirmed deaths.

The government hopes to have everyone over the age of 60 vaccinated by mid-April.
