Protective measures were in place in Milan on Monday as authorities tried to contain a spreading virus that has made northern Italy the focal point of the outbreak in Europe.

Many people were seen wearing masks as a precaution and bars looked less crowded than usual.

The famous Milan cathedral, the Duomo, was closed to tourists, but still open for Mass, while the La Scala Opera house cancelled all shows and concerts until March 1st.

In the city's upscale retail district, shoppers and store staff alike wore face masks.

Bars and pubs where Milanese usually serve the popular traditional evening 'aperitivo' will have to close early.

More than 200 people in Italy's north have tested positive for the virus and five people have died.
