Emergency workers carried bodies out of a maternity hospital in Afghanistan on Tuesday, after a militant attack that left 14 people dead including two newborn babies and their mothers.

The assault on the hospital, in western Kabul, triggered a long shootout with the police.

Authorities said over 100 women and babies were evacuated from the building while the shootout was going on.

It was unclear why the maternity hospital was targeted.

Authorities called it  an "act against humanity and a war crime."

The violence could further undermine a peace process in the wake of a deal signed between the United States and the Taliban earlier this year.

The Taliban have denied they were involved in the hospital attack.
