The grandson of anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela said his grandfather would have admired the global protests sparked by the death of George Floyd and more recently Rayshard Brooks.

Nkosi Mandela said his grandfather, who had championed "a non-racial and a non-sexist struggle to liberate the people of South Africa from a brutal oppressive regime and would have supported the worldwide reaction to the killings.

"We are seeing a shift in global politics in the sense that oppressed nations through Black Lives Matter have now been given a voice to be heard, to speak out against injustices as well as the cross violations of human rights," Nkosi Mandela said.

Floyd, a black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck. Brooks was shot twice in the back late Friday by a white officer who was trying to arrest him at a fast food restaurant for being intoxicated behind the wheel of his car.
