"So today I can report there are 21 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the community, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the current Auckland community outbreak to 72. All cases have been or are being safely transferred to one of our quarantine facilities."

"On contact tracing, the number of contacts has increased significantly - something we had expected as we identify more cases and locations of interest. As of 9 o'clock this morning, 8,667 individual contacts had been formally identified and we expect that will continue to increase through the day as further records are fully processed."

"Yesterday 38,389 tests were processed across the country. So, in the last week, more than 127,000 tests have been processed, equivalent to almost 3% of the New Zealand population. Clearly a huge effort and helps to build the picture of the outbreak and give us increasing confidence about where the boundaries of it are."

STORYLINE:

New Zealand on Sunday recorded 21 new cases of coronavirus in the community in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of active COVID-19 cases to 72.

Talking to reporters in Wellington, Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said 8,667 individual contacts were identified and that he expected that the figure "will continue to increase through the day".

This month, Australia's Sydney outbreak spread to New Zealand, carried by a returning traveler.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promptly imposed the strictest form of lockdown, and officials raced to track 10,000 more people who might have been exposed.

New Zealand has been one of the slowest developed nations in its COVID vaccination campaign, with just 20% of people fully vaccinated.
