Three passengers on a cruise ship in New Zealand have been tested for the new coronavirus.

The vessel, the Golden Princess, remained docked in the South Island tourist town of Akaroa on Sunday.

No one will be allowed off the ship until the test results are known, probably on Monday.

The news came a day after New Zealand banning cruise ships from entering its waters.

The Golden Princess, which sailed from Melbourne, was already in the country at the time the ban was announced.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms.

For some, it can cause more severe illness, especially in older adults and people with existing health problems.
