One Dead, Four Missing in flash floods in Spain; travel disrupted

At least one man died and four people are missing due to the torrential rainfall which resulted in flash floods in northeastern Spain and disrupted services.

At least one man died and four people went missing due to the torrential rainfall which resulted in flash floods in northeastern Spain and disrupted road and air services according to the officials on October 23. The regional police said on Twitter that the body of a man was found late on Tuesday in a beach in the town of Caldes d'Estrac located 40 kilometres north of Barcelona after he had been reported missing.

Rescue Operations

The emergency services said that the firefighters that were backed by a helicopter were looking for two people reportedly a mother and her adult son whose home was swept away in the stream of floodwaters in Vilaverd which is situated 30 kilometres from the port of Tarragona. Rescuers were also looking for two people whose car was found in a river near the village of l’Espluga de Francoli in the same area.

Heavy rainfall snapped electricity

Authorities said that heavy rainfall during the overnight in the northeastern region of Catalonia snapped the electricity supply that affected nearly 25000 people while floods and landslides lead to the closure of over 40 major roads. The Airport Authority of Spain, Aena said that 37 flights were diverted. Southeastern Spain has also faced record rainfall last month which claimed seven lives and have forced more than three thousand people to evacuate after torrential rains hit South-eastern Spain. The situation led to roads, railways and an airport being forced to be closed on September 13 and emergency services saved people stuck in flooded highway tunnels. The floods have caused a lot of destruction and loss of lives even though Interior Minister said that he is positive about the future weather forecast. Also, 13 people died last year due to intense rains that resulted in rivers to overflow in Mallorca.
