Peruvian Health care professionals protested on Friday against the lack of medical equipment and investment in infrastructure, as the country battles with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Peruvian Medical Association, there are more than 230 doctors infected with COVID-19, the illness caused by the new virus.

Peru's government have reported 634 deaths and 21,648 confirmed infections, the highest number in Latin America after Brazil.

Meanwhile, thousands of Peruvian police members lined up to get COVID-19 tests after several members reported infected with the virus.

Carlos Moran, Minister of Interior Affairs, said that "1300 police members have been infected".

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the new coronavirus can cause more severe illness and lead to death.
