A volcano near the Philippine capital continued to emit ash clouds on Saturday, still posing the threat of another eruption. While the Taal Volcano has appeared less active since its initial eruption on Sunday, an alert level 4 remains in place meaning "a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days," according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Alert level 5, the highest, means such an eruption is underway.

Over 121,000 people fled their homes just in Batangas province, which has declared a state of calamity to allow faster releases of emergency funds.

The volcano in Batangas province is over 65 kilometres (40 miles) south of the capital, Manila.

The Southeast Asian archipelago lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the string of faults around the ocean basin where much of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
