Russian military medics in Nagorno-Karabakh

The first contingent of Russian military doctors has arrived in the city of Stepanakert in Nagorno-Karabakh to provide services to the civilian population.

The contingent includes over 60 medics, including surgeons, epidemiologists and anesthesiologists, the Defence Ministry said in a statement Sunday.

They were flown in from the Russian city of Khabarovsk to Yerevan, before travelling by convoy to Stepanakert under the protection of Russian peacekeeping forces.

Meanwhile, Russia's Emergency Ministry has completed setting up a long-term base in Nagorno-Karabakh for its personnel, which includes a medical clinic and  a service station for transport vehicles.

The contingent is continuing to distribute wood and other construction supplies to help locals rebuild their homes, in coordination with the local administration, the ministry said in a statement Sunday.

The contingent repaired its first school in the town of Ivanyan, which is expected to start the new school year on December 1 and is ready for 200 students.

According to the ministry, it helped repair the school's heating system and windows with local officials.
