Over 2,000 schools in Malaysia reopened on Wednesday, accommodating over 500,000 students from 16 to 17 years old.

The reopening of these schools, under strict operating procedures like social distancing and use of disinfectants, is to allow students to prepare for secondary school examinations.

Speaking to reporters after visiting a school in Putrajaya, Malaysia's deputy health minister said that any schools with COVID-19 cases will be closed down temporarily.

As of Wednesday Malaysia has reported 8,590 virus infections, including fewer than 100 in the past week.

For most people, the COVID-19 illness caused by the virus leads to only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
