Church bells rung out across Spain on Monday, in honour of the victims of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The San Ildefonso church in Madrid rung its bells at midday as a mark of respect.

Spain has recorded 17,489 deaths from COVID-19.

Churches have been closed with many clergy livestreming Easter services online.

Church authorities plan to continue with the bell ringing daily until the outbreak ceases.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
