"British for me are my life, it's my life. I cry, I pray for British to come back to Magaluf, because for me, for my family support it's the most important. British here in Magaluf is 100% necessary, it's important."

"If I was to point to one area that is potentially the most uncertain and risky, it is international travel. And the reason for that is as you make progress domestically, you push down infection, you vaccinate the population, then what you need to do is protect that progress. If you import variants or even import more cases, you're undermining or threatening that process and that progress. And that's what you've seen in other countries around the world who've dealt with their borders and travel to protect being able to open up inside."

"Cases have continued to drop and vaccination rates are continuing to climb, so there's every reason that we can expect a holiday this summer. And when we first sip that sangria or taste that tzatziki on our holiday, we'll all just forget about how tough this year has been just for a short while. We need a change of scenery, we need to see new things, experience new places."

As a second summer under the coronavirus pandemic draws closer, holiday resorts reliant on tourists such as Magaluf on the Spanish island of Mallorca are eager to welcome back visitors.

The UK has mooted a traffic light system for international destinations, with travellers coming in from countries designated 'green' not required to self isolate on their return and making vacations simple.

But despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying some level of travel will return from May 17, the full details and grades for each country have not been revealed.

Rosa Ana Morillo Rodríguez, Director General of Tourism for the Balearic Islands, believes Mallorca would be able to meet the requirements to be given the green light.

Magaluf remains largely deserted with few people seen making the most of the pristine beaches on Monday.

German tourists Lars and Sabrina were almost alone as they sat outside a cafe on the promenade.

Diego Belmonte, who owns a fast food takeaway on Magaluf's strip, said the return of British tourists was necessary to sustain his business.

Government figures on Monday showed that the UK reported just one new coronavirus-related death, down from over 1,800 in one day in January.

But Linda Bauld, a professor of public health at the University of Edinburgh, warned opening up to international travel would risk the success created by the vaccination rollout.
