On Thursday, Taiwan launched a blistering attack on Beijing for its continued 'intervention' in the democratic island's internal affairs. The latest condemnation comes after the Chinese Communist Party remarked that Taiwan's participation in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) activities must be based on the 'one China' principle, reported news agency ANI citing Taiwan News.

"China's erroneous statements have gravely harmed the spirit of APEC," the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stated. It also added that China should stop engaging in "improper political activities" and interfering with Taiwan's participation in APEC-related meetings. According to the ministry, Taiwan has participated in the economic and trade forum as a full member since the island joined APEC in 1991.

"Taiwan has the same status as the other members and is subject to the same duties. The agreement permitting Taiwan's participation in APEC has no 'one China' principle," MOFA was quoted as saying by the outlet. The ministry also stated that it rejects China's attempts to misrepresent historical facts.

It also accused China of pressurising Taiwan to accept the 'one China' principle in order to "create the illusion" that the island is under Chinese control. Taiwan is not a part of China, and the Chinese Communist Party has never ruled Taiwan, so Beijing has no right to represent Taiwanese anywhere, including on the world stage, reported the outlet, citing MOFA.

'Taiwan capable of facing Chinese challenges'

It is pertinent to mention here that last month, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen committed to safeguarding the island's sovereignty in the face of "unprecedented challenges" posed by the Chinese military. Speaking on the occasion of the island's National Day on October 10, Tsai stated that Taiwan is no longer perceived as Asia's orphan, but as an "Island of Resilience" which is capable of facing problems with fortitude.

"The more we achieve, the more pressure we face from China. As a result, I would like to remind all of my fellow residents that we don't have the luxury of lowering our guard," she was quoted as saying by ANI. Despite Taiwan's self-government being present for more than seven decades, Beijing claims absolute sovereignty over the island. However, Taipei has fought Chinese aggression by strengthening strategic connections with democracies, especially the United States, which Beijing has frequently opposed.
