Thai police moved on Friday to arrest key figures in a growing anti-government protest movement.

Among those brought into a police station in Bangkok to hear charges was lawyer and activist Arnon Nampha, who has been prominent in speaking out against Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha's administration.

He was arrested outside his home.

Earlier this week, Arnon made a public speech calling for reform of the monarchy, a revered institution that is protected by draconian anti-defamation laws.

Critics say the laws are often interpreted loosely in order to crack down on dissent.

Arnon faces charges of instigating unrest and organizing an illegal gathering, relating to a protest rally on July 18.

A second man, Panupong Jadnok, was also arrested and brought in to hear charges.

More arrests are expected.
