Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Campeche on Wednesday, dumping heavy rain on the already soaked region, before an eventual turn toward the U.S.

Cristobal made landfall near Atasta, just west of the major oil production town of Ciudad del Carmen.

The storm sustained winds weakened to 85 kph after it moved inland, where it was expected to weaken a bit further before heading back into the Gulf Friday, where it could gather strength again.

The storm could threaten U.S. coasts by Sunday, according to a projection by the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Until then, forecasters expect Cristobal to meander along Mexico's Gulf coast, causing severe flooding.

Cristobal formed Tuesday from the remnants of the Pacific Tropical Storm Amanda that had caused deadly flooding and landslides in Central America, killing at least 22 people in El Salvador and Guatemala.
