Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met in Ankara on Monday, ahead of mediation efforts on Libya. Libya's rival leaders are set to meet in Moscow later on Monday, in talks hosted by Russia and closely coordinated with Turkey.

Italy and Turkey support the U.N.-recognised Tripoli government led by Fayez Sarraj, while Russia has backed the eastern government of the commander of the self-styled Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF), Khalifa Hifter. The negotiations follow a truce proposed by Russia and Turkey that began Sunday - the first break in fighting in months. There were immediate reports of violations by both sides, however, raising concerns it might not hold.
