A group of activists for women's rights in Peru, known as Las Micaelas, on Monday marched nearby the meeting place of top officials with the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet.

The activists tried to make Bachelet look at recent derogations on laws protecting women's rights in Peru.

They wore red gowns and white hats that covered most of their faces forcing them to look down, emulating the characters of Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale.

Cahela Cari Contreras, an activist for trans people's rights, said they were requesting Bachelet to "immediately implement concrete measures to grant the life of women, the life of LGBTI people, the life of all people from the sexual diversity and gender."

Some of the members of Las Micaelas are trans women, prostitutes and victims of gender violence. They are named after Micaela Bastidas, who fought in the Peruvian Independence for Indigenous rights.

Angela Villon Bustamante, a sex worker in the protest, said they are victims of criminal groups who exploit them in complicity with police.

Speaking during her meeting with César Landa, Peruvian Foreign Minister, and Félix Chero, Peruvian Ministry of Justice, Bachelet said she expected to work on electoral and justice issues in Peru.
