UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed Pope Francis' decision to endorse same-sex civil unions.

Antonio Guterres told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Pope's decision is "extremely welcome from our perspective," saying that the pope's comments align with the UN "principle of nondiscrimination."

Guterres also condemed police brutality as 12 peaceful protesters were killed in Nigeria on Wednesday.
