VP Naidu meets Iran's Rouhani & others on the sidelines of NAM summit

The Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu met with several world leaders on October 25 on the sidelines of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement summit in Baku

The Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu met with several world leaders on October 25 on the sidelines of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement summit in Baku. VP Naidu is leading the Indian delegation and was received by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev followed by a meeting with Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli. Naidu later interacted with the president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister of Bahrain, Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. Among the other leaders of the Non- Aligned Movement, the Indian Vice President also met with Vice President of Vietnam, Dang Thi Ngoc and Foreign Affairs Minister of Maldives, Abdullah Shahid.

Interacted with Indian Community

A day before the summit, VP Naidu also interacted with the Indian community in Baku along with appreciating their crucial role in the enhancement of relations between the two countries, India and Azerbaijan. The Indian VP also wished the Indians in Baku a Happy Diwali along with applauding their achievements which made the “motherland proud”. Simultaneously, the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar met the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kenya, Ababu Namwamba and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Tilak Marapana amidst the ongoing summit. The theme of the NAM summit is “upholding the Bandung principles to ensure concerted and adequate response to the challenges of the contemporary world”.

'Shares civilizational linkages'

Before the summit, VP Naidu had admitted that he was especially happy to be visiting a country with which India shares civilizational links along with values of respect cultural diversities. While addressing the diaspora, the Indian VP also talked about the 'Ateshgah' temple which has inscriptions in Devnagri and Gurmukhi and is the 18th-century monument with history expected to be, much older. Furthermore, VP Naidu also believes that the level of engagement between the two countries is present 'much below' from the potential. With the diversification of Azerbaijan's economy, VP Naidu sees many opportunities for companies of India to engage with their counterparts in ICT, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and agriculture.
