The Ukrainian Prosecutor General said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be liable for charges of war crimes in Ukraine after recognising the achievement of the Russian 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade, implicated in atrocities in Bucha and Irpin.

In mid-April, Putin awarded special elite designation to the brigade from the Eastern Military District for "mass heroism and valor" after its troops were singled out by internet sleuths and prosecutors as being the primary force being the Bucha massacre, where 403 bodies where found in mass or makeshift graves.

Furthermore, Venediktova said that 600 Russian politicians, military leaders and media figures –propaganda agents – were suspected of aiding Putin in his 'crime of aggression' against Ukraine. The prosecutor said that the office was referring to the Rome Statute, the foundational document of the International Criminal Court, to investigate and charge suspects with war crimes. The Russian governemnt denies it targets civilians.
