Two British sisters of Pakistani heritage have died after being found in a critical, unconscious state in a bathroom in the Pakistani city of Gujrat, British and Pakistani media reported.

According to Pakistani channel Dunya News, Maria Rehman, 25, and Nadia Rehman, 17, were taken to hospital but later died after being found in a bathroom in a house in the Mirpur area, where they had travelled with their father Abdul and mother Zarina to honour their late grandfather.

Dunya News cited "sources" claiming the sisters died due to a gas leakage in the bathroom.

Dunya News reported that the sources said it was an accidental death and an investigation should be launched.

The cause of the sisters' deaths has not yet been confirmed.

Both sisters were buried in a local cemetery, Dunya news reported, adding that a report was registered over the incident.

British broadcaster Sky News reported that the UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following the death of two British women in Gujrat, Pakistan, and have offered consular support to the family."
