Supporters of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) party in Bolivia gathered on Saturday in El Alto to celebrate the victory of its candidate in the presidential election, now president-elect Luis Arce.

"We are grateful for all the support by the population, the people of Bolivia, because thanks to them we are again in power, and now at least we feel protected as Bolivians," said Katerine Limachi, one of Arce supporters among the crowd.

The celebrations comes almost a week after the election day, and only after Bolivia's Electoral Court announced a smashing victory of the leftist party of ousted president Evo Morales.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal said Arce won 55% of the votes against six rivals on the ballot.

The runner up was centrist former President Carlos Mesa with just under 29%.

Crispin Condori, farmer and a MAS supporter said the they expected Arce to win.

"They told us that (Presidential Candidate Carlos) Mesa was going to win, but Mesa didn't win. We are mostly (supporters) of Movement Toward Socialism," Condori said.

The new election was organised by a deeply conservative interim government that tried to reverse many of Morales' economic, cultural and foreign policies.

The interim government immediately recognised results of the election.
