The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, on Sunday launched a major reform of the agricultural sector in a bid to help the poorest farmers in the country.

The event took place in the iconic ruins of Sacsayhuamán in Cusco, in front of officials and thousands of farmers and Indigenous communities from across the country.

Castillo said the reform "does not seek to expropriate land or affect property rights of anyone," but to "to end the exploitation and inequality" over farmers.

The president said the first measure would be to create an agrarian and rural development cabinet.

Castillo himself is a farmer by background.

It's Peru's second major reform of land laws. The first took place in 1969 during the dictatorship of Juan Velazco Alvarado.
