Restaurants and bars reopened on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro as part of the plan by the City Hall to ease the restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic.

In this new phase, restaurants are allowed not only allowed to delivery food, but provide table service following specifics measures, such as two metre (6.6 foot) distance between tables and a maximum capacity of 50%.

For some, like the restaurant manager Marcos Albuquerque, the reopening does not mean a more clear and certain future.

"We are opening today, but as you can see, (it is empty) not only here, but our neighbours too, some of them haven't even opened," he said.

In addition to restaurants, gyms, dance, fighting and swimming classes were also authorised to restart - as long as there is no physical contact, a third of capacity and a time-slot schedule.

People can now do individual training on the beach - whereas before only activities in the sea were permitted.

Tattoo studios were also included in the city hall plan and can open as long as health protocols are followed.

In the big cities like Rio de Janeiro, the number of cases and deaths have decreased, but according to experts the virus is moving to the countryside where there is a jump in the number of people infected.

Brazil have confirmed more than 1.4 million cases of COVID-19.
