As the face of the 2018 'Person of the Year' TIME magazine has chalked a group of journalists, including Jamal Khashoggi, the murdered journalist from Saudi Arabia.

The choice of the cover was to glorify the persistent pursuit of their profession as independent journalists, despite hardships and hurdles of imprisonment and sometimes even death.

Besides honouring Jamal Khashoggi, the journalist murdered inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey, TIME acknowledged journalists from different walks of life including the journalists from the Capital Gazette newspapers in Maryland where five people were shot dead, Maria Ressa the founder of Rappler and anti-government news organisation that was targetted by the authoritative President of Philippines, and the two Reuter reporters jailed in Myanmar for reporting the plight of Rohingya refugees- U Wa Lone and U Kyaw Soe Oo.

They were titled as 'the guardians of truth' by the magazine.

Khashoggi's death instigated international outrage towards the Kingdom, and the thick ally, US President Donald Trump.

The Person of the Year honor, of the TIME magazine, is induced to recognise individuals who have had an influence over the year. The creative director of TIME said that through these four covers, the magazine attempted to amplify the varied voices from across the world.

The photographer who shot the TIME magazine cover of 2018, himself has been imprisoned and blacklisted for his work as a photojournalist covering political disarray and war strained communities of the world.

TIME through their cover aimed at divulging and vocalizing the perilous atmosphere for journalists today.
