  • Trump plans to speak with Putin on Tuesday to discuss efforts to end the Ukraine war, focusing on land and power plants.
  • Trump hopes to achieve a ceasefire, discussing territorial disputes and power plant control as part of peace talks.
  • Trump admits sarcasm in his past claim to end the war in 24 hours but remains hopeful for successful resolution.

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Sunday stated that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, AP reported.

The US president revealed the upcoming call while he was flying from Florida to Washington aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening.

“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday,” Trump said.

"A lot of work's been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end."

While Russia's initial objective of toppling Ukraine has failed, the country still controls significant portions of Ukrainian territory.

Trump indicated that discussions will center on issues such as land and power plants as part of efforts to bring the conflict to a resolution.

“We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants," he remarked, adding that the conversation will involve "dividing up certain assets."

This comes days after the US President earlier stated that he found Putin's latest remarks on the ceasefire, calling Putin’s recent statement “very promising but not complete.”

He added that he remained hopeful Russia would take the right steps toward peace.

"Well, we’d like to see a cease fire from Russia. And we have, you know, not been working in the dark. We’ve been discussing … Ukraine land and pieces of land that would be kept and lost, and all of the other elements of a final agreement. There’s a power plant involved. You know, very big power plant involved. Who’s going to get the power plant and who’s going to get this and that? And so, you know, it’s, it’s not an easy process. But phase 1 is the ceasefire. We’ve been discussing concepts of land because you don’t want to waste time with the ceasefire, if, it’s not going to mean anything. So we’re saying: look, this is what you can get, this is what you can’t get. They discuss Nato, and being in Nato, and everybody knows what the answer to that is, it. Know that answer for 40 years, in all fairness. So a lot of the details of a final agreement have actually been discussed. Now we’re going to see whether or not Russia is there, and if they’re not, it’ll be a very disappointing moment for the world," Trump said.

Trump has always stressed that he will put an end to the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours. However, he recently remarked that he was “being a little bit sarcastic” when he repeatedly claimed as a candidate that he would have the Russia-Ukraine war solved within 24 hours - and even before he even took office.

Trump was asked about the vow he repeatedly made on the campaign trail during an interview for the “Full Measure” television programme as his administration is still trying to broker a solution 54 days into his second term.

“Well, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that," Trump said in a clip released ahead of the episode airing Sunday. “What I really mean is I'd like to get it settled and, I'll, I think, I think I'll be successful.” It was a rare admission from Trump, who has a long record of making exaggerated claims.
