Boris Johnson congratulates Canadian PM Justin Trudeau on re-election

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson congratulated his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on getting elected for the second consecutive term on October 22.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson congratulated his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on getting elected for the second consecutive term. Johnson invoked the shared history and values of the United Kingdom and Canada and also mentioned climate change as one of his priorities.

The Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, won the general elections with 157 seats against 121 seats of the Conservatives. Though Trudeau has won the elections, he will be forced to run a minority government.

Trudeau assures to work for everyone

Trudeau, in his victory speech, set the objectives for his government as ‘hardships for none and prosperity for all’. He also emphasised on his progressive agenda and said he will work for everyone irrespective of who voted for whom. 

“We all want safer communities, a cleaner planet and a better quality of life. We seek hardship for none and prosperity for all, and if we unite around these common goals, I know we can achieve them,” said Trudeau.

Poll campaign marred with controversies

The Canadian Prime Minister scraped through the challenge as his chances looked grim before the polls. Several political pundits called it neck-to-neck fight after Trudeau’s poll campaign got marred with scandals and the blackface controversy tarnished his progressive image. The surfacing of Trudeau’s blackface images were supposedly a big setback and his party leaders even bore the brunt of it during the election campaign. At least six Liberal campaign signs in Kelowna, a city in the south of Canada’s British Columbia province, were defaced with blackface.
