The UK Prime Minister's office lit a candle on Saturday evening to commemorate those who have died in the coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, the facade of 10 Downing Street was lit in blue, alongside other public buildings in the UK, to pay tribute to the country's National Health Service (NHS).

People were encouraged to hold a minute's silence at 9 p.m. (2000 GMT).

There will be a country-wide round of applause on Sunday evening to celebrate the NHS' 72nd anniversary this weekend.

On Saturday, England took its biggest step yet out of coronavirus lockdown with the reopening of restaurants, pubs and hairdressers, along with secular and sacred venues including cinemas and churches.

Britain has the highest COVID-19 toll in Europe, with more than 44,000 confirmed deaths.
