More than half of England's population has been put under tighter coronavirus restrictions. The British capital was put on the second-highest alert level on Friday at midnight, banning people from different households meeting indoors. The region of Lancashire went under the strictest measures as well, in the government's new tiered alert system.

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson threatened to force Greater Manchester into the most severe level of coronavirus restrictions. Local officials have refused to accept the government’s financial package to implement measures targeted at areas with the highest infection rates.
