Pro-European Union supporters in Edinburgh sang Ode to Joy, the EU Anthem, on Friday evening as the UK made its official departure from the bloc.

Britain leaves the EU after 47 years of membership, taking a leap into the unknown in an historic blow to the bloc.

By and large, Britain's big cities voted to stay in the EU, while small towns voted to leave.

England and Wales backed Brexit, while Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain.

As the pro-European Union supporters sung and waved candles to mourn the departure, a number of pro-Brexit supporters also gathered nearby, with police standing guard.
