Captain Tom Moore received a video message of musical birthday wishes from London's Royal Opera House on Thursday, as the war veteran celebrated his 100th birthday.

The British army veteran who started walking laps in his garden as part of a humble fundraiser for the National Health Service has warmed the hearts of a nation that donated millions of pounds to back his appeal.

Captain Moore has now raised 30 million pounds (37 million US dollars) for the NHS Charities Together campaign.

His original target was 1,000 pounds (1,250 US dollars).

Moore began his fundraising campaign on 6 April, aiming to achieve 100 laps of his garden by walking 10 laps a day.

He reached his goal on 16 April, but continued the effort throughout the April.

Further honouring his determination, the Royal Air Force staged a birthday flypast, the public sent birthday cards and Prime Minister Boris Johnson offered a birthday message.
