Across the United Kingdom, people took to their windows and front doors to applaud everyone in the National Health Service for their work in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Thursday evening's "Clap For Carers" initiative echoed expressions of support elsewhere, notably Italy, which has seen the second-most deaths related to the COVID-19 disease after the US.

Like in the rest of the country, people in Brighton and London, started clapping, cheering and set off fireworks.

At least 578 people have died in the UK after testing positive for COVID-19, according to government figures.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
