U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday addressed a local lockdown of the city of Leicester and its surrounding areas after a rise in new coronavirus cases.

Johnson said the government was in "constant communication with the authorities in Leicester, but also monitoring it nationally", and said they would take steps to ease the local lockdown "when the data changes and the situation improves".

The PM made the announcement during a speech on post-coronavirus investment at a college in Dudley in the West Midlands.
