An aircraft entirely powered by hydrogen fuel cells took off for a short flight from an airfield in Britain on Thursday.

The plane flew out of Cranfield Airport north of London and completed a 20-minute flight using zero-emission hydrogen.

Developer ZeroAvia created the six-seat Piper Malibu plane as part of the HyFlyer project supported by a grant from the British government.

The project aims to decarbonise medium-range small passenger aircraft.

ZeroAvia is aiming to make it possible for zero-emission planes to fly up to 250 miles (400 km) by the end of the year.

This could open the way for 'green' commercial flights on popular short-haul routes such as London-Edinburgh and Los Angeles-San Francisco.
