The Trump administration is pushing for a broad ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine by Easter, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The White House has reportedly set April 20 as the target date for a truce, a day that marks Easter in both Western and Orthodox Christian traditions this year. However, officials acknowledge that significant challenges remain, as both sides have yet to bridge major differences in the negotiations.
According to the report, Russia has put forward strict conditions for any agreement, including an end to Western military aid for Ukraine. However, Kyiv and its allies have firmly rejected this demand.
While the White House has not agreed to any restrictions on arms supplies to Ukraine, it briefly paused weapons deliveries earlier this month to put pressure on Kyiv, sources cited by Bloomberg said.
The timeline for a ceasefire remains uncertain, with negotiations still facing major obstacles. The US is expected to continue its diplomatic efforts to find common ground between the warring sides in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump today described the war in Ukraine as “somewhat under control” and insisted that he alone could stop Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to sports website Outkick aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed concern that the conflict could escalate into a global war.
“I’d like to see if we could stop the soldiers being killed – even though they’re not American soldiers – although it could – a thing like that, could lead to World War III,” he said.
Trump emphasized his ties with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I have a good relationship with President Putin and, actually, a good relationship with President Zelenskyy too,” he stated. “It’d be a great thing to be able to stop it. And I will say this, nobody else would have been able to.”
